FMGE is being replaced by NExT. Here is what every Indian student studying MBBS abroad needs to know about pattern, preparation and pass strategy.
What is FMGE / NExT?
Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a screening test for Indian students who studied MBBS abroad. To register with NMC and practise in India, the student must clear FMGE. The exam is being replaced by the National Exit Test (NExT), which will eventually be a common test for Indian and foreign graduates.
Eligibility to appear
To appear for FMGE / NExT, the student must have completed MBBS from an NMC-recognised foreign university with the minimum course duration prescribed by NMC (currently 54 months of academics + 12 months internship).
Pattern and passing criteria
FMGE is a 300-MCQ paper covering pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects. Passing requires 50% (150 correct). NExT is planned as a 540-MCQ exam over multiple days with subject-wise minimum score requirements.
How Shiksha students prepare
Our partner universities run dedicated FMGE coaching from 4th year. Plus, we conduct annual mock exams in India during semester breaks. Students also access online prep platforms and clinical revision modules.
Internship and registration
After clearing FMGE, the student must complete a 12-month rotational internship in an Indian medical college approved by the State Medical Council. Then state registration is granted, allowing independent practice.
Tips from successful students
Start systematic prep from 3rd year. Don't wait for the final year. Cover anatomy, physiology and biochemistry well in 1stβ2nd year, then build pathology, pharmacology and microbiology. Clinical subjects in 4thβ5th year. Consistent study beats last-minute cramming.
